Design Relationships

27. April 2021

The true and conscious relationship between art, architecture and design has a long history. Although murals were largely ignored in the middle of the 20th century, in the past, large-scale murals have always been the focus of interior design, and to some extent determined the architecture.

Similarly, if architects plan with interior designers and artists, sculpture or sculptural form (as a fixed and permanent point of a building) may be the most important design feature. Perhaps the best design is that there is no obvious difference between architecture and interior, and even artworks are incorporated into the overall design.

The design relationship between interior design and architecture can be illustrated by an extreme example: stage layout. The scene used for drama production is a form of interior design, but unlike all other aspects of interior design, it tries to create its own world and atmosphere, and these worlds and atmospheres are only related to drama, not to the world or even reality. The process of creating the world is precisely the function of the stage, but in real life, it is impossible to separate a specific internal space from other things around it. Sometimes, designers may try to create “dramatic” indoor spaces, but here is a strong and clear point that every indoor space must be related to the building and its surrounding environment.

The relationship between a single artwork (painting, print or sculpture) and the interior design is most important in terms of proportion and location, not in terms of theme, color or style. If it is good, a very old painting will look good in a modern interior. In the interior decoration with some exquisite traditional works, very modern sculptures may be beautiful. If any piece of art can succeed in the interior, it can be placed correctly or choose any interior space that is used in conjunction with the entire space. Of course, there is no need to match the color of the painting with the interior decoration, and there is no need to choose a theme in an artwork that reflects a specific theme, such as canteen food or study hunting scenes.

Interior design related to landscape or urban landscape is sometimes misunderstood by architects. A crazy but classic example is the ubiquitous picture window in suburban housing. Usually, the only view seen from the window is the picture window of the adjacent house. When the scenery is beautiful, it should be possible to plan the interior space according to the floor plan and direction of the furniture, so that the seating arrangement can make full use of the scenery, and can also be used for other functions. For exsample functions, can be related to the fireplace or conversation group, it is the same.

In many areas of interior design, the field of graphics is becoming more and more important. In every public space or public building, signs, catalogs and room signs all play an important visual role. Due to the increased size and complexity of the structure, only in recent years has the emphasis on good architectural graphics. Buildings such as airports rely on clear and beautiful graphics to make the space work properly and make it aesthetically cohesive. A related aspect of graphics is the printed matter as part of certain internal functions. Interior designers must consider the design of well-designed restaurant menus, wine lists, napkins and matchboxes. Designers dealing with shops or stores care about the graphics of shopping bags, signs and posters. The interior designer is usually the actual graphic designer, or he works with the graphic designer, just like the architect works with the interior designer or landscape designer.
